A full day is planned at the Gold Rush Festival next weekend
Posted on September 1, 2010 · Leave a CommentAhh September, the kids are back in school, college football is about the begin and many events at The Mill can be held during the daytime (when it’s not super hot and super humid). Next weekend is the Gold Rush Festival at The Mill and it will be an action-packed Saturday, and guess what? It’s Free!
The 5K road race will start at 8:30am. Runners need to make sure they are there in plenty of time for the starting gun. If you have any race questions you call Rusty Dean (770-459-6778). Anyone running the 5K? Let us know how you do! We are always interested when Arbor Bend residents take on a new challenge!
The parade will be at 10am. The arts, crafts and food vendors booth will be open all day starting at 9am.
Starting at noon, there will be dance performances and the music performances start at 2pm. From 2-6pm there will be Gospel Fest where various local gospel choirs will be performing (including a reggae choir! How cool is that?).
The evening music is actually a battle of the bands where you can listen to four bands and vote for your favorite. It’s 1.00 per vote and they’ll announce the winner at 10:30.
The contestants are- The Zach Flowers Band at 6pm, then Ghost Town at 7pm, Dallas at 8pm and then the event will wind down with The Doo Win Band.
Toys for Tots will also have a booth there, and they’ll be taking donations.
Such a nice way to spend a fall Saturday in Villa Rica. So head on out on September 11th, go for a nice run, eat some great festival food and enjoy tons of live music.

Free and Fun Adventures Await – Geocaching!
Posted on August 24, 2010 · Leave a CommentHave you ever been Geocaching? For those who aren’t familiar with the term, Geocaching has become a phenomenon in a time where everyone is trying to save money, yet looking for adventure. If you have a GPS you can Geochache! As defined by the website, “Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment”.
If you have a typical GPS for driving directions make sure to change your settings to “on foot” or “walking”. This is a great way to get outdoors for a bit and become more familiar with your town. When I first did this it was in a city I wasn’t too familiar with and it enabled me to spend time with new friends and learn the roads. For those of you who live in Arbor Bend, here are some Geocaches within a 20 mile radius.
When you find the cache you will write your name, date, and time of when you found the cache and sometimes you will even take an item from the box and leave an item. It just depends on the cache. Items can be something such as a button, pen or even something random you might have laying in your car. So go on and get out there! Become familiar with your community and discover places you didn’t know existed! The best thing about this adventure, its free!
Want some all access AE shopping?

They already have their fall inventory in and ready for the school year. Their summer inventory -or at least what’s left of it- is also on sale. Since it should stay warm for the next two months you could really clean up this weekend
Braves Own the Field with 10-2 Win
Posted on August 18, 2010 · Leave a Comment
Okay, I’m not even going to pretend I wrote this. I know nothing about baseball, so I enlisted the help of the resident “sports sherpa” Matt to guest blog for you folks today. So whatcha think?
Mike Minor (56) was showered last night with beers as he completed his first winning game in the majors, and the Braves are proud to have Minor on the roster.
While Chipper Jones (10) may be out recovering from his torn ACL, his fellow teammates keep giving him a reason to smile. The Washington Nationals are in town for a 3-game series with the Braves, and after seeing last night’s game, these last two games are going to prove to be an epic win for Atlanta.
The Nationals scored first at the top of the 6th inning in last night’s game, giving them their only lead which conveniently ended after the Braves stepped up to the plate at the bottom of the 6th.
The Braves tied the game in the 6th before Matt Diaz (23) nailed a drive to left side of the park, allowing his teammates to score a two-run double, allowing the Braves to lead 4-2 at the end of the 6th. That lead, while nice, wasn’t really acceptable for our Braves.
The 7th inning wasn’t any different, as Melky Cabrera (53) was given another two-run double for the Braves, taking the lead up to 8-2 over the Nationals.
The Braves denied any runs the Nationals wanted to make during the final innings, as the Braves continued to form a conga line around the bases, giving the Braves their 10-2 final score at the ending of the game.
If last night’s game was any indication as to how the Braves’ plan to handle the Nationals, then it’s a good thing today is “Two-for-One” Wednesday for Terrace and Field Level seats at Turner Field. Both Terrace Level and Field Level seats start at $36.00, which isn’t bad when really you get two tickets for the price of one.
Tonight’s game starts at 7:10 PM, and if you can’t make it to the game, it’ll be aired on Fox Sports South.

ABC line up from A to Z
Posted on August 11, 2010 · Leave a CommentThe ABC tv line-up has been hit or miss in past years, but I am happy to see more hits than misses for the fall.
Mondays see no change as Castle is back at its usual late evening slot. Dancing with the Stars in on Mondays and on Tuesday nights.
Tuesdays there are two new shows scheduled, and I will give them a real chance- namely because there is nothing competing with them on other channels. The first in No Ordinary Family and other is Detroit 1-8-7. The former is a (superhero) family style sit-com and the former is a cop procedural-I have never watched a show set in Detroit so why not give it whirl?
Wednesday night is sitcom night with The Middle and the new Better With You and Cougartown all airing. I like The Middle okay but I really love Cougartown. It has a dumb name, but it is a really well-written show.
Grey’s is back on Thursday nights; bring on McDreamy! That’s all I have to say on that.
And of course, on Saturday it is college football all evening. Go Dawgs!
So program your TIVO kids we’ve got more to watch than we have time for!

groovin’ the night away on Saturday
Posted on August 2, 2010 · Leave a CommentThe summer concert series at The Mill Amphitheater in downtown Villa Rica is such a fun time and this Saturday will be prove to be no different. You’ll be able boogie down under the summer night sky with a fabulous Caribbean four-piece band called Tropical Steel Vibes.
They’ll be performing a free concert from 7:30-9:30pm and you can park easily right downtown. So pack a picnic and a blanket (or camping chair) and head on out.
Oh! And don’t forget, you can’t bring dogs up to The Mill anymore.
My Guilty Green Secret
Posted on July 30, 2010 · Leave a CommentI have found the funniest post by Susan Goldberg on EcoSalon.com where she likens her use of Bounty paper towels to an addiction. She can’t let them go. She admits to trying a more green version of paper towels and them not performing as well, so it just re-enforces her addiction. This cracked me up because I have the same problem, only it is with receipts. Every time I am offered a receipt (even if I pay cash!) I take it. My billfold gets to the point where I can’t be closed sometimes. When I go to clean out my billfold it is an event at my house. Did you ever see the Seinfeld episode with George’s exploding wallet? Well, that’s my billfold…
So I have to ask, what is your less than green habit? We’ve all got them, maybe it’s unnecessary car trips or running the A/C lower than suggested? Come on you can come clean, or come green as it were. *wink*
